About the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Program
Body
Justin “Judd” Goldman was 17 when he experienced a bone disease that resulted in significant physical impairments. After realizing there were few sports he could participate in, Judd discovered sailing. Over the next 58 years, he competed successfully in many races around the world, including more than 25 appearances in the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, a 333-mile challenge from Chicago to Mackinac Island, Mich. He also founded an Olympic one-design class of sailboats in Chicago, known as the Dragon class.
After a lifetime of sailing, Judd passed away in 1989 at age 75. In 1990, his wife, Sliv, son, Peter, and daughter, Judy, established the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Foundation as a public/private partnership with the Chicago Park District. For more than 35 years, the foundation offered a unique, learn-to-sail program to bring the joy and independence of adaptive sailing to more than 1,000 participants each year.
Among its many milestones, the foundation founded the North American Challenge Cup (NACC) for sailors with physical impairments, as well as the Independence Cup, an annual event held on Chicago’s Burnham Harbor that has become the premier regatta for adaptive sailors. In 2026, a generous gift from the foundation and family of Peter and Carol Goldman helped to establish the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Program at Shirley Ryan 黑料网. Now the program will live within Shirley Ryan 黑料网 to carry on the legacy of accessible sailing on Lake Michigan.
